A welcome return to holding practice days at Eccles Friends Meeting House – the venue had been booked out for all of 2018 by another group but that other booking has ended sooner than expected.

Who is the Day for?

This is an informal meditation practice days for mutual support and inspiration for people with an interest in integrating meditation guidance into their professional work, whether that professional work is clinical, social, educational, corporate etc.

While people new to mindfulness practice are welcome, be aware that participants are invited to explore longer practice periods particularly in the afternoon session and so some experience of personal meditation practice (however erratic, irregular or dormant that may be!) may be helpful. Those new to mindfulness practice may like to see how the typically shorter and more explicitly guided sessions go and decide whether or not to stay for the afternoon session over lunch.

Aims of the Day

These days aim to explore different forms of meditation practice led by participants (who wish to and have arranged to do so) and allowing us to share different approaches to meditation teaching. These days are therefore also an opportunity for those wishing to practice guiding meditation sessions to do so in a supportive environment.

The focus of the day is practice not theory – so while we may offer opportunities to discuss our experiences of a practice session the aim is not to formally teach theory or professional skills. We hope these days can also offer a chance to be kind to ourselves – to refresh and recuperate.

Because the venue has a practice room upstairs and a kitchen / dining room downstairs, participants can easily dip in and out of the practice sessions. Each of us has different ways to be kinder to ourselves – one person may find a mix of quieter meditation upstairs for a while and then a hot drink and leisurely read of a newspaper or book downstairs or a walk outside suits them while another may find it is to take part in all the days practices.

These days are intended to be culture-neutral so that people who practice meditation from different traditions can easily practice together. We assume the common ground is being guided by the human voice – everything in addition to this will depend on the particularities of a given practice someone is leading.

Programme

A typical programme for a day is as follows:

09.45-10.15 – Arrivals and refreshments (please arrive by 10.00)
10.15-10.30—Introductions
10.30-12.30—–A number of shorter guided practice periods .
12.30-1.30 [approx time]——-Lunch – bring your own or use the local shops
1.30-4.00ish—–2-3 blocks of longer periods meditation with a short break between blocks
4.00-4.30ish—–End of practice day (the ending could be earlier than 4.30 if we have reached a natural end point).
The day is structured so people who need to leave early can do so at lunch or after one of the afternoon blocks of meditation. You are also welcome to come for just the afternoon period.

The room costs mean we have to charge a flat fee regardless of whether attending the full day or half the day.
We usually do a body scan type practice which is often helpful to do lying down – so consider bringing a mat and support for your head. A blanket is also useful to bring on all but the warmest of days. Some of the chairs are not the best for posture so do bring a cushion or two if your back needs support.

Venue: Friends Meeting House, Eccles. Manchester. M30 0DS.

Access for wheelchairs, parking is available on-site.

Fee: £20 includes hot drinks and biscuits!
