Event organiser: Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice Led by: Trish Bartley A 2 day workshop for mindfulness-based teachers, currently working or interested in working with people with cancer. Trish Bartley is one of the CMRP founding teachers. She has been teaching MBCT for Cancer (MBCT-Ca) to cancer patients at a regional oncology unit since 2000. She has written a book (Bartley, T., Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer: Gently Turning Towards (in press) Oxford: Wiley Blackwell), which is due to be published later this year. She leads the Teaching 2 Masters Programme module and trains on Teacher Training Retreats (TTR1) and other CPD programmes and leads mindfulness-based retreats and workshops nationally and internationally. Details of Workshop - This two day workshop will offer an introductory overview of the values, practice and approach of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer (MBCT-Ca).  It is offered to those already teaching mindfulness-based approaches in oncology or other contexts. Over the 2 days we will
  • Explore some aspects of the core practices used in MBCT/SR, as they are guided and adapted for cancer participants
  • Experience some of the short practices and processes used in MBCT-Ca
  • Discuss the significance of the participant group and the emphasis on kindness and self compassion within the intervention
  • Overview the cognitive model that underpins MBCT-Ca – including the four practice movements of Intention; Coming Back; Turning Towards; and Kindness
  • Explore the teaching implications of working with this population and consider ways that we can support ourselves as teachers.
The workshop will use a variety of (mostly experiential) processes including
  • Practice
  • Dialogue and Inquiry – both in peer groups and the large group
  • Discussion and Reflection – in small and large groups
  • Presentation
This is an introductory workshop. If there is sufficient interest, a longer teacher training process will be offered in Wales in 2012. This adaptation of MBCT for Depression has been developed over ten years with more than 20 groups of oncology participants by Trish Bartley. She has collaborated with Ursula Bates, Head of Bereavement and Psychological Services at Blackrock Hospice, Dublin to develop the formulation that underpins MBCT-Ca and the mindfulness-based programme that Ursula teaches to palliative care patients.
